Guide to buying Refrigerator
|
When buying a refrigerator, look for the total capacity and special storage capacity. For a family of three or less, a 19 cubic feet refrigerator should be enough. Families of four or more should look at side-by-side models, which usually are larger. You should measure the available space before looking at your choices. Add at least an inch to all dimensions so you can easily install and clean all the areas and air-circulation isn't obstructed. Top-down refrigerator models are most common. Top-freezer arrangement is more popular than the bottom-freezer arrangement because it offers more convenient access to the freezer. Bottom-freezer refrigerators are usually cheaper to operate. Side-by-side models use more electricity than top-down models but they offer eye-level access to the doors and require less space for doors to swing open. Outside doors for freezers are preferable because they allow for longer storage of frozen items. Most models have automatic defrost. Some more expensive models are frostless, meaning that they have heaters that melt frost before it accumulates. Refrigerator operates constantly and energy cost can add up, so look for the lowest possible EnergyGuide average annual costs. Extra features like automatic icemakers can require more energy. Some new models have power saving features which limit the use of small motors that are need to prevent condensation from forming during humid weather. Turning them off during dry weather can save energy. Place the refrigerator away from major heat sources, keep the areas behind and below the refrigerator as clean as possible, and defrost frozen foods in the refrigerator to save energy. A popular feature included with some refrigerators is an automatic icemaker. Remember though that icemakers require a cold water connection. As with any other appliance, check the length of the warranty. The standard is one year on the refrigerator plus four extra years on the refrigeration mechanism. |
