Burma is
the home to Buddhism and shares
borders with Thailand, Laos, China, India and Bangladesh. It has glittering gilt pagodas, a handsome and tranquil people and some
unique culinary delicacies.
Vendors stream through the streets calling their wares, and in the bazaar
areas, an evening is usually complete with a glass of freshly
crushed sugar cane juice, ice cubes clinking, to sip while sampling some
of the delights on offer from the food stalls.
As in so many other South East Asian countries, long-grain rice, served
steaming hot, is the cornerstone of the meal.
Soup, served piping hot, is also frequently part of a meal, its flavour
varying from mild to strong to offset the other dishes. There is always a
selection of curries (meat, chicken, fish, prawns or eggs) and an array of
accompaniments including a chilli condiment, a salad of raw leaves, fruit
or vegetables, crisp fried onion and garlic, sliced spring onions, roasted
chick pea flour, chopped fresh coriander leaf and a home-made pickle. |
